PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAMS, STUDENT AMBASSADORS OUTREACH PROGRAM

WHY THE STUDENT AMBASSADORS PROGRAM:

The College of Engineering & Science has implemented a Student Ambassador Program. Its purpose is for Detroit Mercy students to meet, visit and showcase E&S through various on- and off-campus activities with students with an interest in Engineering. Research shows many students don’t know the opportunities in STEM fields until they are introduced to them. By attracting young and under-represented minorities to these careers, we begin to diversify the workforce and diversity leads to innovation.

Activities are hands-on, allowing Detroit Mercy Engineering students and interested students to participate in these activities. In fall 2018, we impacted approximately 800 students through various activities primarily with high school and middle school students. Funding would assist with the purchase of engineering/science kits and supplies to showcase activities in K-12 schools by E&S student ambassadors, provide transportation to and from K-12 schools meeting with E&S student ambassadors (includes busing K-12 students to Detroit Mercy), and meals for students visiting campus.

HOW CAN WE DO MORE?

Our goal is to expand on the success of the E&S Student Ambassador Program as a mission of the College to expose students to careers in STEM fields, increase Detroit Mercy’s student pipelines to various STEM activities, and increase interest in engineering majors through direct student-to-student contact. For the next year, we would like to increase school visits to all of our Catholic/Jesuit schools and have a stronger presence in our Detroit Public Schools.

Activities include:

  • High School STEM Pop-Ups and Interactive Activities can range from 30-60 minutes such as:
    • Assembly Line Engineering
    • Bioengineering Hand Sensors
    • Robotics Demonstrations
    • Gum Drops Structure
    • Motorized Cars
    • Building Electrical Circuit
  • Student Ambassadors participation in events such as
    • FIRST Robotics
    • Engineer your Future at FORD Product Development Center
    • STEM X Day
    • On-Campus Visit Days
  • Off-Campus Detroit Mercy high school visits, visit engineering clubs and competitions
    • Detroit Cristo Rey High School
    • Romeo High School Engineering and Technology Center
    • Utica Center for Science and Industry
    • University of Detroit Jesuit
    • Renaissance High School
    • Cass Technical High School
    • Other metro Detroit high schools

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

The cost of engineering kits, supplies, transportation to and from school and even the expense of feeding K-12 students visiting Detroit Mercy is very prohibitive. Your monetary donation to help with programmatic costs is important to the success of this program.

Choose a giving level

$10

Feed a visiting student

Each contribution of this amount supports students visiting Detroit Mercy to dine in the Titan Dining Room and experience the life of a Detroit Mercy college student for one day.

$25

Tank of gas

Your gift will support the cost of transporting student ambassadors to various activities off campus to middle and high schools and community organizations.

$100

Transportation Assistance

Many schools, especially in Detroit, to not have funding to cover transportation of students to school visits. Every dollar you give can help augment the cost of buses so Detroit Mercy bring students to our campus.

$250

Supplies

It takes money to run STEM pop-up and demonstration activities. Your support will help update the student ambassadors’ tools kits, purchase new ones and purchase additional supplies in order to provide K-12 students with quality activities that enhances their STEM experience provided to them by the student ambassadors.
