We are a dental team of 20 individuals consisting of dental students, dentists, and a hygienist, all from Detroit Mercy's ASDA (American Student Dental Association) chapter, and we’re seeking out your help in helping us provide free dental care to an underserved community in Guatemala.
This August we will be returning to the Guatemalan highlands, and staying in the town Chichicastenango for a week. This is an area that is plagued by hardship and severe poverty. We expect to see a similar number of patients as we did in years past, up to 300 children and adults. Many come in with excruciating tooth pain that's hindered their ability to eat and sleep. Dental work we will provide involves relief of pain, cleanings, fluoride treatments and extractions. Additionally, we'll be visiting nearby schools to spend time with students and educate through oral hygiene instruction, providing everyone with toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss.
Our team feels extremely grateful for this opportunity to serve this community, but it does come at a price. We are required to completely fund this trip (flights, transportation, lodging) and provide all the supplies. The costs of all this quickly add up. As dental students, debt is a big concern, so managing and saving money is crucial.
This is where you can help us offset the cost and ultimately, help us run a successful clinic. No matter how small or large, each and every donation will get us closer to our goal and would be greatly appreciated.
Your support would mean the world to us and we look forward to updating everyone along the way to show you just how you have helped us. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
