John A. McLean, Jr. Lecture Series
Dr. John A. McLean Jr. taught in the Chemistry Department from 1959-95, serving as professor and chair. During his storied career, he mentored hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, won numerous teaching and research awards, and volunteered his service to several professional societies. In 1995, he was given the title of Professor Emeritus and in the year 2000, an endowed scholarship was created in his honor.
In 2017 we established a permanent lecture series at Detroit Mercy to acknowledge Dr. McLean’s contributions to our department and to Chemistry in Detroit. By incorporating this event annually, our goal is to increase relationships with alumni, peers and professors, and other local universities, and to encourage undergraduates to pursue careers in STEM fields. With your donation, we can achieve this.
2018 is a big year for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. We're celebrating the 80th anniversary of our Chemistry Club, which is the oldest organization on campus and has been rated Outstanding by the American Chemical Society for the last 14 years. Administrative Assistant Jane Schley, the backbone of this department, is also celebrating her 45th year at Detroit Mercy. Mark your calendars because we will celebrate all these achievements at the next lecture on Sept. 28, 2018.
