Not only did Ben qualify for the NCAA Division 1 Cross Country Championships, he did it showing his typical courage and ambition in an inspiring run. No waiting to sit and kick with the pack, just strong front running! Pictured above, the lead he had as he passes the 5k mark heading out for the second loop of the 10k race.
The regional is a qualifying run and the power teams confident in their qualifying standing, run to advance saving as much energy as possible for their championship 10k effort a week later. Thus, regional races are a slow burn especially on the soft and challenging course in Terre Haute, the lead pack ran a similar first 5k last year. Ben is never afraid of leading and was too fit, too ready and with too much energy to sit and kick as he slipped ahead early. Ben ran strong as he does at the front trying not to exert too much energy, hitting the halfway point in 15:43, a pace well within his capabilities. Ben stayed steady and strong as the peloton slowly upped their effort and they really began racing at the 8k mark. Ben battled to the wire but his stomach distress that has popped up at the end of real hard efforts appeared and slowed his kick. Jaret Carpenter from Purdue got by Ben for the win as Ben held off the rest of the All-American filled peloton. The winner ran 31:09 to Ben's 31:11, a 15:27 last 5k for Ben. He didn't fade, he made his opponents get him as he had done throughout his career. Ben definitely earned his spot next week at the NCAA Championships.
You can see all our regional photos at our facebook album. The album a mixture of some professional photos with some iphone photos using the Terre Haute shoe tree as a back drop. The pictures worth a 1000 words in getting the feel of all that entails the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
What a season. A season that extends to November 17th, with Ben Kendell racing for All-American honors in Madison, Wisconsin. Ben ran his first three regionals there on the Zimmer Championship Course and will be ready to stay with all his rivals as the early pace will no way be as controlled as the regional.
Titan harrier Ben Kendell (Huntington Woods, Mich.) captured the first Horizon League men's cross country individual crown in school history Saturday afternoon, winning the title with a time of 24:19. It was the third-fastest run at the league meet in school history. He was named the Horizon League Athlete of the Year in cross country following the HL victory and has won four of five races entered this season. Kendell placed in the top-five at the league meet in all four seasons of cross country, finishing runner-up twice along with his win on Saturday.
